First held in 1910 as part of a local shrine festival in Daisen City, Akita Prefecture, this event has grown into one of Japan’s Three Great Fireworks Festivals. Today, it serves as the stage for the National Fireworks Competition, where top pyrotechnic masters from across Japan gather to compete for prestigious awards, including the Prime Minister’s Prize.
The festival takes place every year on the last Saturday of August and attracts more than 700,000 visitors. It features two parts:

Daytime fireworks, known for colorful smoke effects and artistic shapes.
Nighttime fireworks, showcasing traditional shell fireworks, synchronized music displays, and breathtaking starmine performances.
