Owakudani offers a unique experience as an active volcanic valley with sulfurous vents and steaming hot springs. Visitors can witness the impressive geological activity, enjoy panoramic views of the Hakone mountains and, on clear days, glimpse Mount Fuji. A popular activity is tasting the famous black eggs, traditionally boiled in the natural hot springs.
The eggs at Owakudani turn black because they are boiled in the naturally heated, sulfur-rich waters of the volcanic hot springs. The sulfur and iron in the water react with the eggshells, giving them their distinctive black color. Traditionally, eating one of these Kuro-tamago (black eggs) is believed to extend one's life by seven years.
Hakone Shrine, also known as Hakone Gongen, boasts a history of over 1,260 years and is dedicated to three Hakone deities. Its main attractions include the iconic red floating torii gate (Heiwa no Torii) standing gracefully in Lake Ashi, the beautiful main shrine complex nestled among ancient cedar trees, and the serene pathway lined with traditional lanterns, offering a sense of historical reverence.
Yes, on clear weather days, it is possible to enjoy stunning views of Mount Fuji from various points around Lake Ashi and near Hakone Shrine. Popular viewing spots include the shores of Lake Ashi, particularly around Moto-Hakone and Hakone-machi, and from the sightseeing cruise boats on the lake. Early mornings often offer the clearest visibility.
The pirate ships on Lake Ashi are sightseeing vessels designed to add a distinctive and memorable touch to the scenic cruise experience. These unique ships, such as the Royal II and Victory, offer visitors a whimsical way to traverse the lake while providing picturesque views of Mount Fuji, Hakone Shrine's torii gate, and the surrounding natural landscapes of Hakone.
Yes, Lake Ashi offers several walking paths and activities for visitors. You can stroll along the scenic lakeside trails, including parts of the ancient Old Tokaido Road lined with cedar trees, providing a historical walking experience. Popular activities also include taking a sightseeing cruise on the unique pirate ships and exploring nearby attractions like the Hakone Sekisho (Checkpoint).
Traveling between these Hakone attractions is well-connected. You can take the Hakone Ropeway directly to Owakudani. From Owakudani, the Ropeway continues to Togendai, a pier on Lake Ashi. From Togendai, a scenic Lake Ashi sightseeing cruise can take you to Moto-Hakone or Hakone-machi. From these lake towns, local Hakone Tozan buses provide convenient access to Hakone Shrine.
The iconic Heiwa no Torii (Peace Gate) at Hakone Shrine is best experienced by walking down to the water's edge for a close-up view and photo opportunities. For a different perspective, taking a Lake Ashi sightseeing cruise offers unique views of the torii gate from the water. Visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon can help avoid crowds and offer a more serene experience.
