FAQ

1. What is the best time of year to see the Northern Lights in Whitehorse?

The best time to see the Northern Lights in Whitehorse typically runs from late August to April. During these months, the nights are long and dark, increasing visibility. Peak viewing often occurs during the colder, clearer months of winter, from November to March, when the sky is frequently free of clouds. Aim for nights with minimal moonlight for the clearest displays.

2. What are the key differences between seeing the Northern Lights in Whitehorse versus Yellowknife?

Both Whitehorse and Yellowknife offer excellent Northern Lights viewing opportunities. Whitehorse provides a rugged, natural Yukon experience with opportunities for wilderness activities like snowshoeing and dog sledding alongside aurora viewing. It is generally more accessible for a combined city and nature trip. Yellowknife is known for its high aurora borealis frequency due to its location under the auroral oval, but Whitehorse also sits under the oval, offering comparable chances with a distinct regional charm.

3. What is included in a Whitehorse Northern Lights tour experience?

A comprehensive Whitehorse Northern Lights tour often includes roundtrip flights from Vancouver, hotel transfers, and daily Northern Lights viewing sessions. These sessions typically take place in a cozy, heated cabin with hot drinks and snacks. Many tours also feature an aurora photography class to help capture the spectacle, and a city tour of downtown Whitehorse to explore local culture and natural views. Optional excursions like the Yukon Wildlife Preserve or Takhini Hot Springs might also be available.

4. What should travelers consider when selecting a Whitehorse Northern Lights tour?

When choosing a Whitehorse Northern Lights tour, consider the viewing comfort, such as heated cabins and included refreshments, and whether photography guidance is provided. Look for tours that offer convenient roundtrip flights and hotel transfers for a seamless experience. Also, evaluate options for daytime activities, like city tours or optional excursions to places like the Yukon Wildlife Preserve or Takhini Hot Springs, to enrich your overall trip.

5. How can visitors track the real-time Northern Lights forecast in Whitehorse?

To track real-time Northern Lights forecasts for Whitehorse, travelers can utilize online resources such as space weather prediction websites or aurora forecast apps. These tools provide information on geomagnetic activity (Kp-index), cloud cover, and solar wind data, which are crucial indicators for aurora visibility. Monitoring these forecasts close to your travel date will help optimize your viewing opportunities.

6. Is Whitehorse located within the Arctic Circle?

No, Whitehorse is not located within the Arctic Circle. Whitehorse, the capital of Yukon, is situated about 300 kilometers (approximately 186 miles) south of the Arctic Circle. Despite not being within the Arctic Circle, its high northern latitude still provides excellent conditions and opportunities to view the spectacular Northern Lights, especially during the long, dark winter months.

7. What activities are available at the Yukon Wildlife Preserve during a Whitehorse tour?

At the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, visitors can observe and photograph various northern Canadian animals in their natural habitats. This includes species like elk, moose, caribou, bison, muskox, and different types of sheep and deer. The preserve offers walking trails or guided bus tours, allowing for close-up viewing and learning about the wildlife. It’s a great opportunity to connect with Yukon's unique fauna.
