Product Info

  • Kujokan, located in the garden of the Tokyo National Museum, is a shoin-zukuri style reception hall originally built for the Kujo family, one of the five regent families, within the Kyoto Imperial Palace. After serving as a Kujo family villa in Akasaka, it was relocated to its current site in the museum garden in 1934. We are opening this building, which is usually closed to the public, exclusively for this tea ceremony experience. This is a 60-minute experience where you will encounter the Urasenke tea ceremony in this historic room. You will begin by learning about the history of the tea ceremony, the 'spirit of tea,' and the story of Kujokan, followed by a demonstration by the instructor. It is a peaceful moment to listen to the sound of boiling water and the whisking of tea. You will then enjoy seasonal nerikiri sweets and matcha, and finally, with guidance from the instructor, you will whisk your own matcha using a bamboo whisk (served with dry sweets). The session concludes with a reflection, Q&A, and a commemorative photo. Your instructor is Munemitsu Hisayoshi (Koshin-an), an associate professor of the Urasenke tea ceremony. As the fourth generation of his Urasenke tea ceremony school, he has been familiar with the tea ceremony since childhood and has introduced it to people from over 20 countries through international youth exchange programs hosted by the Cabinet Office. On the day, Mr. Hisayoshi will lead the session primarily in English, with Japanese support provided as needed. Koshin-an staff will be present to provide guidance and support in Japanese. No prior tea ceremony experience is required, and all tea utensils, sweets, and matcha are provided. We welcome participants from both Japan and abroad, as well as individual participants. * The Tokyo National Museum admission fee (JPY 1,000 for adults, JPY 500 for university students; free for those under 18 and 70 and above) is not included in the fee. Please purchase your ticket at the main gate. * Nerikiri sweets are seasonal and may differ from the photos. We cannot accommodate individual requests for allergies or dietary restrictions.
