What are the highlights of the Yokohama Daisekai Trick Art Museum?
Yokohama Daisekai is located in front of the Tenchomon Gate in Yokohama Chinatown and is one of the largest comprehensive entertainment facilities in the area. The Trick Art Museum (Art Trick Museum) occupies the 3rd to 8th floors. Trick art originates from the European technique of 'trompe-l'œil,' which uses perspective, shadows, colors, and lighting, layered with highly transparent pigments to create light refraction and reflection, making flat paintings appear three-dimensional. Here, you might step into a seemingly bottomless trap, get tangled by a giant octopus, float in mid-air, or walk into a famous painting. Every photo looks incredibly realistic.
What can you do at the Yokohama Daisekai Trick Art Museum?
Suggested poses and shooting positions are marked next to each piece. You can follow the examples or get creative. Some works look even more three-dimensional if you close one eye or view them through your camera lens. The 8th-floor Horror Trick Gallery features a 'Mystery x Horror Art' theme with over 10 interactive works. The facility also provides a bypass route for children or visitors who do not enjoy horror themes. The 6th-floor 3D theater runs for about 8 minutes per show, and 3D glasses are available for loan upon entry. The 4th-floor Mystery Science Museum exhibits works by trick artist Kokichi Sugihara, along with classic photo spots like the 3.6-meter-wide Angel Wings and the Ames Room. On the 2nd floor, you can rent one of about 400 Chinese costumes (additional fee applies) to wear while taking photos for a more immersive experience.
