Day 1: Ulaanbaatar – Kharkhorum
Pick-up from your hotel in Ulaanbaatar and begin your journey toward Kharkhorum, the historic capital of the Mongol Empire.
Kharkhorum Genghis Khan decreed that Kharkhorum be established as the capital of the Mongol Empire in 1220. It was located on the west bank of the Orkhon River. Although it was destroyed centuries ago, it remains one of Mongolia’s most fascinating historical sites.
Visit the Kharkhorum Museum, which offers deeper insight into the rise of the Mongol Empire and the story of Kharkhorum city through rich archaeological findings and displays.
Continue to the Orkhon Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore sacred monuments, stone inscriptions, and ancient temple ruins — a legacy left by powerful empires such as the Turks, Uighurs, and Mongols. The valley is a true open-air museum of Mongolia’s rich nomadic heritage.
Discover the Erdene Zuu Monastery, the oldest Buddhist monastery in Mongolia, built in 1580. Set against the backdrop of modern Kharkhorin town, this spiritual site features beautiful architecture and houses a remarkable collection of religious artifacts.
In the evening, unwind and spend the night in a traditional ger (yurt). Immerse yourself in authentic nomadic life, learn about the local lifestyle, and enjoy traditional Mongolian cuisine prepared by your host family.
Day 2: Elsen Tasarkhai – Kharkhorum– Return to Ulaanbaatar
Travel to Elsen Tasarkhai, also known as the Semi-Gobi. This unique landscape offers a striking contrast of sand dunes, steppe, and mountain ranges all in one place. Enjoy sweeping views of the Gobi Desert and majestic mountains. Take a short camel or horse ride through the dunes and feel as though you’re truly in the heart of the Gobi. Explore the ruins of an ancient temple hidden among the rocky outcrops, and take a peaceful walk surrounded by the untouched beauty of nature.
Return to Ulaanbaatar in the evening, with unforgettable memories of Mongolia’s history, culture, and landscapes.
