Mongolia travel FAQs and useful info

Is Mongolia friendly to tourists?

Mongolia is generally safe for tourists, though it requires considerable advance planning. While locals are friendly, English is not widely spoken outside Ulaanbaatar, and visitors should be prepared for potential communication barriers and petty crime in urban areas. Embracing local customs, respecting boundaries, and planning most aspects of your trip in advance, especially if venturing beyond Ulaanbaatar, will lead to fantastic experiences.

Can US citizens travel to Mongolia?

Yes, US citizens can travel to Mongolia. A visa is not required for stays of up to 90 days, provided your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry. Visitors staying longer than 30 days must register with the Mongolian Immigration Authority within seven days of arrival.

Is Mongolia expensive for tourists?

Mongolia is not inherently expensive, but travel costs can vary significantly based on your travel style. While daily costs in Ulaanbaatar might be low, expenses increase for remote areas due to the need for specialized transport and lack of infrastructure. Opting for mid-range group tours with accommodation, guides, and transportation is often more affordable than private arrangements. Staying with local families in traditional gers is cheaper than hotels.

What is the best time to visit Mongolia?

The best time to visit Mongolia is from June to August for warm, pleasant weather and vibrant green landscapes, perfect for outdoor activities and experiencing cultural festivals like Naadam in July. For a unique winter experience with frozen landscapes and ice festivals, consider visiting in February. Autumn from September to October offers fewer crowds and beautiful scenery, while spring in May is ideal for witnessing nomadic herders move with their families and animals.

What should I know about Mongolian culture before visiting?

Mongolian culture is deeply rooted in nomadic traditions and respect for elders and nature. Hospitality is paramount, and accepting offers of food and drink is customary. Always use your right hand or both hands when giving or receiving items. It's polite to dress modestly, especially when visiting temples or rural homes. Learning a few basic Mongolian phrases will be greatly appreciated by the locals.
