Kinkaku-ji was originally built in 1397 as the retirement villa of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third Ashikaga Shogun. After his death, it was converted into a Zen temple according to his will, following the Rinzai sect of Buddhism.
Yes, the top two floors of Kinkaku-ji are covered in genuine gold leaf. This luxurious application reflects the Kitayama culture of the Muromachi period, showcasing opulence and prosperity. The gold also symbolizes purification and relief from negative thoughts, contributing to the temple's serene and revered atmosphere.
Kinkaku-ji is officially recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, part of the 'Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.' Its significance lies in its stunning architecture, the seamless integration with its surrounding garden and pond, and its role as an iconic representation of Japanese cultural and historical periods.
Kinkaku-ji was tragically burnt down in 1950 by a deranged monk. The current structure, a faithful reconstruction, was completed in 1955. This event is a significant part of its modern history, yet its exact replica ensures visitors can still experience its original grandeur and architectural splendor.
At Kifune Shrine, visitors can experience the distinctive 'water fortune-telling' (mizu-ura mikuji), where fortunes are revealed by floating a special paper in the sacred water. The shrine's mountain forest setting offers a serene, mystical atmosphere, particularly along its iconic stone staircase lined with red lanterns.
Miyama Thatched Village is renowned for its preservation of traditional 'kayabuki' (thatched-roof) houses, offering a rare glimpse into rural Japan's past. Visitors can wander through a living museum of traditional farmhouses, some still inhabited, experiencing a tranquil and nostalgic atmosphere distinct from urban centers.
Yes, this comprehensive tour is designed for a convenient one-day trip. It typically includes pick-up services from key locations in both Osaka and Kyoto, allowing travelers to easily visit Kinkaku-ji, Kifune Shrine, and Miyama Thatched Village without the hassle of arranging multiple transport connections.
At Kifune Shrine, don't miss the picturesque stone steps with red lanterns and the unique water fortune-telling. In Miyama Thatched Village, explore the traditional thatched-roof houses, observe the rural lifestyle, and enjoy the tranquil beauty of the countryside. Both offer excellent photo opportunities and a deep dive into Japanese culture.
