Kobo Seikan is a facility that combines a workshop, shop, and cafe. It offers visitors the chance to tour a Yamanaka lacquerware production site, try their hand at woodturning, shop for goods, and enjoy cafe drinks and sweets served in lacquerware. This course includes a workshop tour (with explanations), making a single-flower vase, and a lacquerware cafe experience (includes one drink). Lacquerware artisans work here daily. Through this experience, you can observe their work up close and learn about the lacquerware manufacturing process. Our staff will provide easy-to-understand explanations. Next, you will use the same woodturning lathes and planes (kanna) as the professionals to create your own original single-flower vase. Through this process, you will get to experience authentic woodturning. Since you will be shaping most of the piece yourself, it is a bit challenging, but very fun! Our friendly woodturning artisans will guide you carefully so you can complete your piece on your own. You are sure to be satisfied. It is a great experience. Afterward, you can enjoy a drink served in lacquerware at the cafe or treat yourself to some sweets. Please relax and enjoy the lacquerware experience. Feel free to ask our staff or artisans if you have any questions. As long as you can hold the woodturning plane (kanna) firmly, even children can participate. Notes [Please be sure to read] Main Risks and Safety Rules 1. Risk of Injury and Debris - There is a risk of injury due to the use of high-speed rotating lathes and sharp blades. - During the process, wood (the vessel) may come loose and fly off, and wood shavings or dust may scatter. 2. Clothing and Accident Prevention - Avoid clothing with loose sleeves, tie back long hair, and be sure to remove all accessories. - Wearing gloves while operating the lathe is prohibited to prevent entanglement accidents. 3. Enjoy a close-up look at a Yamanaka lacquerware workshop
Lacquerware workshops are usually divided into specialized tasks, so it is rare to see various processes in one place. However, here at Kobo Seikan, you can observe several integrated processes, including woodturning and lacquer coating. It is a very rare workshop where you can see artisans at work up close. Our staff will also explain each process, helping you understand lacquerware in an easy-to-follow way.
Experience authentic woodturning on a lathe
Our friendly woodturning artisans will guide you carefully, allowing you to experience authentic woodturning. In this plan, rather than making a vessel that requires advanced skills, you will create your own original single-flower vase from scratch. Since you will perform most of the woodturning process yourself, it is a highly satisfying and rewarding experience. Of course, we take safety very seriously, so you can participate with peace of mind. Small children can also participate. *Children up to 4th grade must be accompanied by a guardian. You can take your finished work home with you.
Enjoy drinks using lacquerware (1 free drink)
After the woodturning experience, you can enjoy a drink in a lacquerware cup. (The plan includes one cafe drink.) Please experience the comfort and feel of wooden vessels. Although not included in the plan, you can also enjoy sweets served in lacquerware. We highly recommend it.

What You Can Expect

Duration: 2 hour(s)

1 Day

Registration and changing clothes. You will be asked to change into work clothes in preparation for your woodturning lathe experience. (5 minutes)
A tour of the lacquerware production process. You will observe each stage of the process through glass partitions in the workshop. A staff member will provide a clear explanation of the history of Yamanaka lacquerware and each stage of the process. (15 minutes)
Woodturning Lathe Experience. You'll actually use a woodturning lathe to create a single-flower vase. You'll carve and finish the vase from a round wooden rod, starting from scratch. Since you'll be doing almost all of the work yourself, the sense of satisfaction and accomplishment upon completion will be immense. Of course, a craftsman will provide assistance if you encounter difficulties. (30-40 minutes)
Take a break at the cafe. Enjoy your drink in a lacquerware cup, perhaps paired with a single-flower vase you made yourself. How about some delicious sweets to go with it?
