Product Info
Daisuke Michigami, a master tile artisan and president of Daiei Ceramics, carries on a 400-year-old family tradition. He is on a relentless quest to preserve the 'wisdom,' 'techniques,' and 'teachings' embedded in every single Awaji tile, ensuring they are passed down to future generations. What drives his unwavering dedication? We invite you to discover the secret behind his passion.
At 'Gallery Tsuchiza,' a space entirely enveloped in earth and tiles, Master Michigami will share his passion for the craft. He will discuss the allure of Awaji tiles born from the local soil over time, the heart he pours into every piece, the landscapes created by layers of tiles, and his commitment to the 'beauty' of Japanese architecture.
Awaji tiles suffered a major blow due to baseless rumors following the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, which claimed that tiled roofs were responsible for the extensive damage. Despite the uncertain future of the industry, Master Michigami found great potential in 'Ginfurubi'—tiles fired to have a vintage, weathered texture that feels both new and nostalgic—and has since unveiled a series of new charms for Awaji tiles.
His vision has now taken shape, connecting people through tiles and sparking a renewed appreciation for traditional Japanese beauty. Master Michigami's 'relentless challenge' continues.
After hearing his story, you will have the chance to try your hand at being a tile artisan yourself. In 'Gallery Tsuchiza'—a space you would never expect to find inside a tile factory, overlooking a town that has thrived on tile production since the Edo period—you can create your own 'Kawaza' (coaster), a unique piece of art that represents a new possibility for tiles.
You can create an original design or choose from a variety of pre-prepared traditional Japanese patterns.
Challenge yourself to create a piece filled with your own artistic sensibility.
