The Aomori Nebuta Festival is an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan, celebrated with colossal, illuminated "nebuta" floats. These magnificent floats depict brave warriors, mythical figures, or characters from Kabuki, showcasing intricate artistry. The festival embodies a vibrant cultural heritage, traditionally believed to ward off summer drowsiness, and is known for its energetic parades and a deep connection to local folklore.
The Akita Kanto Festival is renowned for its spectacular display of "Kanto" poles. These are long bamboo poles adorned with numerous paper lanterns, which skilled performers balance on various parts of their body, such as their forehead, shoulders, or hips. This traditional technique, involving approximately 280 swaying Kanto poles, creates a mesmerizing sight in the night sky, demonstrating remarkable balance and strength.
The Aomori Nebuta Festival is an annual event that typically spans about a week in early August. During this period, the main evening parades featuring the grand nebuta floats occur nightly, drawing large crowds. The multi-day celebration ensures ample opportunities for visitors to witness the spectacular processions.
The primary highlight of the Aomori Nebuta Festival is the breathtaking parade of giant, illuminated nebuta floats accompanied by lively dancers and traditional musicians. Visitors can enjoy the spectacle from various spots along the parade route. For a prime viewing experience, some tour options provide access to reserved grandstand seating, offering an excellent, unobstructed view of the moving artworks.
For departures specifically on August 6th, the itinerary includes exclusive experiences during the Aomori Nebuta Festival. This special day offers the chance to witness the Nebuta sea parade, where floats are moved across the water, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display. These unique events provide a memorable grand finale to the festival experience, often with grandstand viewing for the best vantage point.
Lake Tazawa is a significant stop due to its status as Japan's deepest lake, reaching an impressive depth of 423.4 meters. Its mysterious allure is matched by its stunning natural beauty, characterized by strikingly clear, deep blue waters and verdant surrounding landscapes. The itinerary includes a 20-minute stop, allowing visitors to appreciate the picturesque lakeside scenery.
Travelers can enjoy a relaxed and unhurried stroll through Morioka city during their designated leisure time. This allows for personal exploration of the city's charming streets and local attractions. It's an ideal opportunity to experience the local atmosphere, perhaps discover unique shops, or simply relax before catching the Shinkansen train for onward travel.
This multi-day tour package showcases two of Tohoku's most iconic summer celebrations: the Aomori Nebuta Festival and the Akita Kanto Festival. These renowned events are central to the region's cultural identity, offering participants an immersive experience into Japan's vibrant traditional arts and festive spirit.
