A gravel path leads through a mossy garden toward a traditional temple building at 三千院 in Japan.

Sanzen-in Temple, located in Ohara, Kyoto, is one of the three temples of the Tendai sect. Within its expansive grounds, ancient trees reach for the sky, moss carpets the grounds, and streams murmur. With cherry blossoms in April, azaleas in May, hydrangeas in July, and vibrant autumn foliage, the temple offers breathtaking natural scenery throughout the year. The two pond-style gardens designed by Kanemori Sōwa—"Juhei-en" and "Yūsei-en"—are the best spots to appreciate Sanzen-in's seasonal beauty. The main wooden Amida Buddha statue and the attendant statues on either side are designated as Important Cultural Properties of China.

Traditional wooden houses line a quiet street in Arashiyama, Japan, with the paved road extending between the buildings.

Arashiyama, comprised of Arashiyama and Sagano, boasts a wealth of cultural attractions, breathtaking natural scenery that changes with the seasons, and a vintage train. It's home to numerous ancient temples and shrines, including Tenryu-ji Temple, a World Heritage Site. The famous bamboo path runs between Nonomiya Shrine and Ōkōchi Sanso. A popular spot for cherry blossom and autumn foliage viewing, Arashiyama attracts many visitors in spring and autumn, making tickets for the Sagano Scenic Railway often hard to come by. Winter and summer offer a tranquil escape, perfect for travelers seeking peace and quiet. Arashiyama also features many long-established restaurants, wagashi (Japanese sweets) shops, and charming general stores. Kimono and rickshaw rentals are also available, making it a perfect place to slow down and relax.

A sightseeing train travels along forest tracks through autumn trees beside a stream in 嵐山.

Sagano Scenic Railway (Recommended route: Sagano - Kameoka Station - Sagano) Operating dates: March 1st to December 29th (The train will be closed during January and February for winter maintenance) Closed on: Wednesdays

A traveler walks up a stone path through the bamboo grove at 嵯峨野竹林小径 in 京都.

The Sagano Bamboo Grove is located in Arashiyama. The 500-meter-long path leads to the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove by walking through Nonomiya Shrine towards Okochi Sanso. Walking through the grove, you can hear the serene sound of the wind rustling through the bamboo leaves—a sound recognized as one of Japan's 100 most precious and enduring sounds. This is also where Ang Lee filmed "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," and the Tenryu-ji Temple along the path boasts a stunningly beautiful Japanese garden. Every December during the Arashiyama Lantern Festival, the bamboo grove and Togetsukyo Bridge are illuminated, creating a breathtaking spectacle in the winter.

A covered wooden footbath in 岚山 offers benches where visitors can soak their feet in shared warm water.

Deep within the HANNARI-HOKKORI plaza at Arashiyama Station, inside the Arashiyama Electric Railway Station, lies a Japanese-style foot bath modeled after JR Yufuin Station in Kyushu. You can purchase seasonal sweets from the nearby shops and enjoy them while soaking your feet. Let the waters of Arashiyama Onsen completely soothe the fatigue after your walk. Address: 20-2 Saga Tenryuji Tsuruji-cho, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto City (Usage fee: 200 yen including towel). The foot bath is self-service. Purchase a ticket at the station information center; a towel will be provided for drying your feet. Please wash your feet before entering the bath; there is a washing area at the entrance.
