FAQ

1. Do I need an SSI Open Water Diver certification to participate in scuba diving activities?

Yes, participating in scuba diving activities typically requires a valid diving certification, such as the SSI Open Water Diver certification. This is essential not only for your personal safety but also to ensure you possess the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate the underwater environment. Upon obtaining this certification, you will be qualified to dive with a buddy to a depth of 18 meters (60 feet) worldwide and rent diving equipment.

2. What is included in the cost of the SSI Open Water Diver course?

The cost of the SSI Open Water Diver course generally covers several components to ensure a comprehensive learning experience. This typically includes online theory course materials, professional instructor fees, rental of diving equipment (such as tanks, BCDs, regulators, wetsuits, etc.), skills training in a pool or confined water, four open water dives, and the final international diving certification application fee. You can book this course through KKday for a convenient, all-in-one booking process and to ensure high-quality professional dive training services.

3. After obtaining my SSI Open Water Diver certification, can I enroll in advanced diving courses from other systems, such as PADI AOW?

Yes, after obtaining your SSI Open Water Diver certification, you can enroll in advanced diving courses from other international diving organizations, such as PADI's Advanced Open Water (AOW) course. Most major dive training agencies have reciprocal recognition for certifications, meaning your foundational diving qualifications are widely accepted, offering flexibility and convenience for your future advanced diving studies.

4. What are the main differences between the SSI Open Water Diver course and the Advanced Open Water Diver (AOW) course?

The SSI Open Water Diver (OWD) course is the entry-level certification for scuba diving, focusing on fundamental diving knowledge, skills, and safety procedures. Upon qualification, you can dive with a buddy to a depth of 18 meters (60 feet). The Advanced Open Water Diver (AOW) course builds upon the OWD foundation, incorporating specialty dives like night diving and deep diving (up to 30 meters/100 feet), and underwater navigation. It aims to enhance a diver's experience and ability to handle various situations, making diving more diverse and challenging.

5. Are SSI dive certifications permanently valid, or do they have an expiration date?

SSI dive certifications are valid for life and do not have a specific expiration date. This means your scuba diving qualifications are permanently valid once obtained. However, to maintain proficiency and ensure underwater safety, SSI still recommends that divers who have not dived for an extended period (e.g., over a year) consider taking a Scuba Refresher course to review skills and knowledge, ensuring they can dive safely again.

6. What kind of diving activities can I participate in after getting my SSI Open Water Diver certification?

After obtaining your SSI Open Water Diver certification, you will be qualified to participate in scuba diving activities worldwide with a buddy, to a depth of 18 meters (60 feet). This means you can rent full scuba gear, join organized dive trips, and explore the rich underwater world, such as admiring coral reefs and observing marine life. You can also continue your education based on this foundation, learning more specialty diving skills to unlock more advanced diving experiences.

7. How does the online theory learning component of the SSI Open Water Diver course work?

The online theory learning component of the SSI Open Water Diver course is designed for flexibility, allowing students to study anytime, anywhere through the MySSI app or website. The course content covers foundational theories of scuba diving, including physics, physiology, equipment knowledge, dive planning, and safety procedures. You can proceed at your own pace, completing readings, watching videos, and taking quizzes for each module, building a solid knowledge base for the in-water practical sessions.

8. How many open water dives are included in the SSI Open Water Diver course, and what is their primary purpose?

The SSI Open Water Diver course includes four open water dives. The primary purpose of these dives is for students, under the guidance of an instructor, to apply the diving skills learned in a pool or confined water environment to real open water conditions. Through practical application, students gradually build underwater confidence, become familiar with diving equipment, and practice essential skills such as buoyancy control and emergency procedures, ultimately gaining the practical experience and capability needed for diving in open water globally.
