The Mojiko Retro area is filled with a Taisho Roman atmosphere. You can visit the former Mojiko Hotel and Mojiko Station to experience the charm of historical architecture. Taking the Kanmon Strait ferry to admire the magnificent sea views and scenery along both shores is also a unique experience. Additionally, the International Friendship Memorial Library and the Kyushu Railway Museum are worth a visit.
We recommend planning for about half a day to a full day in the Mojiko Retro area. If you wish to thoroughly visit museums, take the Kanmon Strait ferry, and stroll leisurely, allocating four to six hours would be more comfortable. This will allow you to experience various featured attractions and savor local delicacies.
The main way to get to Mojiko Port from Hakata Station is by JR train. You can take a limited express train on the JR Kagoshima Main Line to Kokura Station, and then transfer to a local train on the JR Kagoshima Main Line to Mojiko Station. The entire journey takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours.
Mojiko Port is known for its nostalgic atmosphere, and you can find many cultural and creative products related to historical buildings. Local specialties such as banana-flavored sweets and processed seafood products (especially around Kanmon Market) are popular souvenirs. Additionally, some unique specialty shops sell distinctive handmade crafts.
Kanmon Market's operating hours are typically from around 5:00 AM to 3:00 PM on weekdays (Tuesday to Friday). On weekends and public holidays (Saturday, Sunday, and public holidays), it is open from around 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Generally, Kanmon Market is closed on Mondays. We recommend checking the latest information before your visit.
The most convenient way to get from Mojiko Station to Kanmon Market is by taking the Kanmon Strait ferry. The ferry ride from Mojiko Port to the Kanmon Market pier in Shimonoseki takes about 5-10 minutes, and the market is nearby. You can also choose to take a bus or taxi, but the ferry is faster and offers sea views.
Yes, you can use a valid JR Pass to take local JR trains on the JR Kagoshima Main Line from Kokura Station to Mojiko Port. A JR Pass typically covers the fares for JR trains on this route, making it an economical choice for traveling to Mojiko Port.
Motonosumi Shrine is famous for its spectacular scenery of red torii gates stretching along the coast. Its unique feature is a donation box placed at a torii gate on a high platform. It is said that if you successfully toss a coin into the box, your wish will come true. This is a challenging and enjoyable unique custom.
