What makes Nikko Futarasan Shrine special?

Founded in 782, Nikko Futarasan Shrine is the oldest shrine in Nikko. With Mount Nantai as its sacred object of worship, the shrine grounds span 3,400 hectares, comprising the main shrine (Honsha) in the mountains, the Chugushi shrine on the shores of Lake Chuzenji, and the Okumiya shrine at the summit of Mount Nantai. The main shrine complex was designated a World Heritage site in 1999 and is dedicated to the deities Onamuchi-no-Mikoto, Tagorihime-no-Mikoto, and Ajisukitakahikone-no-Mikoto, long revered as a sacred site for prayers regarding good relationships and prosperity. This ticket allows you to choose between the Shinkyo Bridge, Shinen Garden, or Treasure Museum for an in-depth visit.

What can I see at the Shinkyo Bridge and Shinen Garden?

The vermilion Shinkyo Bridge spans the Daiya River and serves as the entrance to the sacred domain of Nikko. Measuring 28 meters long, 7.4 meters wide, and 10.6 meters above the water, it is the only remaining 'Hanebashi' (cantilever) style ancient bridge in Japan and is ranked alongside the Kintaikyo and Saruhashi as one of Japan's three most unique bridges. A crossing ticket allows you to walk across the bridge yourself. The Shinen Garden is located on the left side of the main shrine grounds and is the area closest to the main hall, housing important cultural properties such as the Hie Shrine, Mikoshi-sha, Daikoku-den, and Tomodachi Shrine. The Karado-Kasuga lantern, donated in 1292, is known as the 'Yokai Lantern' because its flickering light at night was once mistaken for a ghost, and it bears over 70 sword marks from a samurai. The Daikoku-den Hall houses the Daikoku deity and the 2.62-meter-long 'Taromaru' tachi sword. The Futarasan Sacred Spring, fed by two sources—the Yakushi Sacred Water and the Sake Spring—is considered a fountain of youth. Nearby, the 'En-musubi-no-Sasa' (bamboo for good relationships) and the 'Child-bearing Stone' are popular spots for prayers, and the rest area serves matcha and coffee brewed with the sacred spring water.

What treasures are in the Chugushi Treasure Museum?

The Treasure Museum is located within the grounds of the Chugushi shrine on the shores of Lake Chuzenji and houses sacred treasures accumulated over 1,240 years of faith at Nikko Futarasan Shrine. The collection includes 179 swords, among them 2 national treasures and 16 important cultural properties. The national treasure 'Bizen Osafune Tomomitsu' is the largest national treasure tachi sword in Japan, and the important cultural property 'Nenekirimaru' exceeds 3 meters in length. Also on display are Nanboku-cho period gold-copper portable shrines (mikoshi) and horse tack, important cultural property artifacts excavated from the summit of Mount Nantai in Shimotsuke Province, and imperial gifts. The tenth giboshi (ornamental railing cap) missing from the Shinkyo Bridge is also kept here.
