[Spot Introduction]

  • Kannon Hall (Birth Shrine)
This is a forest of faith in safe childbirth, and is also known as Kyoshado. Prayers for safe childbirth are entrusted to the rook piece of shogi, which can only move in a straight line. It is said that if a pregnant woman borrows this piece, takes it home and worships it at home, she will be able to give birth safely. There is also a belief that if a miracle is achieved, a new piece will be made and returned along with the borrowed piece. Right next door is the Kaisan-do Hall, which enshrines the Zero of Shodo Shonin, the founder of Mount Nikko, and just behind that is the cliff and Butsuiwa Rock, where a stone Buddha is enshrined.
  • Hongu Shrine
The shrine was built in 790 and is considered the birthplace of Nikko Futarasan Shrine. Along with the main shrine and Takio Shrine, it is one of the three Nikko Sansha Gongen and has been an object of worship since ancient times. The main hall of the shrine is designated as an Important Cultural Property, and its beautiful architectural style attracts many visitors. The black door at the back of the main hall was used to worship the mountain, which is the object of worship, and you can feel the remnants of mountain worship.
  • Shihonryuji Temple
It is said to be the first temple on Mount Nikko, founded by Shodo Shonin, who opened Mount Nikko, in 766, and is the birthplace of Nikko. The name Shihonryuji Temple is said to come from "Shiun-Ryuji Temple," and it is said that when Shodo Shonin was praying, four purple clouds (Seiryu (East), Suzaku (South), Byakko (West), and Genbu (North)) floated down from the Shiun stone (pictured in the photo on the left).
The grounds include a lacquered three-story pagoda and a Kannon hall.
*Shihonryuji Temple, which was founded in 766, no longer exists.
  • Shinkyo Shinkyo is a wooden lacquered bridge at the entrance to the World Heritage Site, and is the first stop on this tour. Legend has it that when Shodo Shonin was opening up Mount Nikko, he was blocked by the rapids of the Otani River that runs through the bridge, and prayed to the gods for protection. Jinjao appeared and released two snakes, from whose backs sprouted mountain reeds, forming a bridge. The bridge was given its current vermilion-lacquered appearance during the major reconstruction of Toshogu Shrine in 1636, and is now one of Japan's three most unusual structures.
