The ideal time to visit Yehliu Geopark is typically in the morning to avoid larger crowds and enjoy cooler temperatures. However, an afternoon visit, particularly closer to sunset, can offer beautiful lighting for photography of the unique rock formations. Be prepared for sun exposure as the park is open-air.
Yehliu Geopark is renowned for its fascinating geological formations carved by sea erosion and weathering. Key attractions include the iconic Queen's Head, Fairy Shoe, Candlestick Rocks, Mushroom Rocks, and various sea-eroded holes and pot holes. These distinctive formations create a landscape that feels otherworldly and offers unique photo opportunities.
The famous Queen's Head rock formation is situated in Area 2 of Yehliu Geopark, which is one of the main viewing sections. Visitors can follow the clearly marked paths within the park. Due to its popularity, there is often a designated viewing area and sometimes a queue for taking photos directly with the formation. Park staff are usually present to guide visitors.
Yes, there is an admission fee required to enter Yehliu Geopark. This fee typically grants access to all public areas of the park, allowing visitors to explore the various geological formations, observe the coastal landscape, and utilize the park's facilities, including walkways and visitor centers. The entrance fee contributes to the maintenance and preservation of this natural wonder.
The name 'Jiufen' (九份) literally translates to 'nine portions' or 'nine shares.' Its origin dates back to the Qing Dynasty when the area was remote and only nine families resided there. Whenever supplies were brought from the outside, they would be divided into nine portions, giving rise to the name. This historical detail reflects the community spirit and early isolation of the village.
Visiting Yehliu Geopark is generally pleasant during spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) when temperatures are mild and rainfall is lower. Summers can be hot and humid, while winters are cooler and can be windy. It's advisable to check the weather forecast for strong winds or rain, especially during typhoon season (June-October), as strong sea currents can impact visitor experience and safety.
Beyond the iconic Queen's Head, Yehliu Geopark features numerous other fascinating formations. Visitors should look for the 'Sea Candles,' which are tall, slender rock columns resembling candles, and the 'Mushroom Rocks,' characterized by their mushroom-like caps. Other notable formations include the 'Elephant Rock,' 'Ice Cream Rock,' and various 'Ginger Rocks' which showcase the park's diverse geological wonders.
Jiufen's transformation into a major tourist destination is strongly linked to its past as a prosperous gold mining town. After the decline of mining, the village gradually faded until its unique charm and historical architecture caught the attention of filmmakers and artists. Its atmospheric narrow alleys, traditional tea houses, and stunning mountain and sea views, reminiscent of its golden era, now attract visitors seeking a nostalgic glimpse into Taiwan's past and beautiful scenery.
