San Sebastian Cathedral
This century-old religious structure
is the focal point of Bacolod’s religious roots. The cathedral incorporates Baroque style architecture, which gives it a simple yet elegant look from the outside. The inside looks even grander with its ornately designed ceilings, octagonal marble columns, and sparkling chandeliers. At night, the cathedral is beautifully illuminated to show the beautiful structure and its magnificent statues.
The Ruins of Bacolod is a magnificent testament of love by Don Mariano Lacson for his wife Maria Braganza. The mansion was designed by an Italian architect and is built with a mixture of cement, sand, and egg white, allowing it to stand the test of time. Called the “Taj Mahal of Negros,” it has 10 massive rooms adorned with beautiful furniture made from narra wood. The flooring is made with intricately designed Machuca tiles for a touch of elegance. The ruins are also surrounded by lush green gardens that are perfect for weddings.
Bacolod City Plaza
This historic plaza is often used for gatherings of students, workers, and families. Performances and even church services are also staged here. Perhaps, one of the most beautiful parts of this plaza is the Stage of Bacolod City Plaza, a memorial built for the fallen soldiers who died to protect Bacolod’s democracy and peace. The plaza is also decorated with beautiful ponds and ornate fountains to provide people with a beautiful site to relax. The area is also full of vendors from whom you can purchase some souvenirs.
Pope John Paul II Tower
The tower is an important landmark in the city of Bacolod. It is a tower dedicated to the late Blessed Pope John Paul II after his visit to the capital on February 20, 1981. The tower was built exactly where the Pope celebrated holy mass for a million people. Each level of the tower is decorated with Pope John Paul II memorabilia which makes it a great place to remember and pay respects to the late Pope. The entrance is marked by an 8-foot sculpture of the late Pope.
