I've been to Nikko three times, but my most recent visit (Sa 10/18 + Su 10/19) was the best visit simply because of this tour. My friend and I checked into Free Guided Tour's welcome desk right before 1:00 PM. (The guided tour is available until 2:00 PM, but because the tour lasts about an hour, they require that guests come to the desk by 1:00 PM at the latest.) We were graciously welcomed by Ichiro-san, who quickly closed up shop and then started the walking tour. He gave us information of the area's "Big Three": Toshogu Shrine, Futarasan Shrine, and Rinnoji Temple. I suggest coming to Nikko early in the morning to visit at least Toshogu Shrine since the ticket line gets very long towards the middle of the day. Then, head to the Free Guided Tour's desk in front of Rinnoji Temple to take the tour. The tour will provide more in-depth information about Nikko. Thank you again, Ichiro-san!
