A Roman cave: a fascinating story to discover Tivoli's underground world.
Tivoli is a historic city that is older than Rome; it was founded in 1215 BC (as Tibur), nearly 500 years before the legendary founding of Rome in 753 BC, and is known for Villa d’Este and Villa Gregoriana, a spectacular park featuring paths, woods, natural caves, and ancient ruins.

The cave was excavated to extract materials (such as travertine and tuff) for constructing buildings and infrastructure above ground. It was later reused and expanded in the Middle Ages and the post-classical period to transport goods and people without disrupting life above ground.
