Experience the unique underground labyrinth of the Retz Adventure Cellar – Austria's largest historical wine cellar. Dug up to 20 meters deep into pure sea sand, the corridors of this centuries-old structure stretch for a total of over 20 kilometers. Some parts are even three stories high, and the tunnels are denser and more extensive than the city's road network above.

The guided tour begins with a brief historical explanation of the main square. Only with a professional cellar guide can you immerse yourself in the impressive, history-filled world below the city. Listen to exciting legends and learn everything worth knowing about the cellar and Retz before concluding your walking tour with a tasting – either wine from the Retz region or grape juice – in the wine shop at the Hotel Althof.

Delve into a fascinating piece of Austrian wine history and enjoy a glass of regional culture underground!

  • Know Before You Go: The Retz Adventure Cellar is a historic wine cellar and is therefore not wheelchair accessible. There are around 300 steps in total spread over one kilometer. The Erlebniskeller is therefore not wheelchair or stroller accessible.

  • Know Before You Go: The temperature in the Adventure Cellar is constant at about 10–12°C all year round. Warm clothes are recommended for the guided tour.
