Begin your journey in York in the late afternoon or early evening and leave the city behind as the light begins to fade. Visit the hilltop village of Crayke and St. Cuthbert’s Church. Learn about the village’s long history, legends, and darker stories while taking in views across the Vale of York.

Continue to the haunting ruins of Byland Abbey. Hear about medieval monastic life, the Reformation, and stories associated with the abbey and surrounding countryside. Spend time in the historic market town of Helmsley. Hear local folklore and darker stories connected with the town and castle.

Travel through the countryside around Castle Howard after dark. Stop at an atmospheric exterior or roadside viewpoint where practical and safe. Finish the outward journey around the dramatic ruins of Sheriff Hutton Castle. Hear stories from the village’s medieval past and see the castle from appropriate public viewpoints.

Return through the dark North Yorkshire countryside and get dropped off back at your York accommodation or agreed location.
