Embark on a day trip from Mostar to the heart of the Boka Bay, a journey that transitions from the rugged Herzegovinian karst to the dramatic, fjord-like coastline of Montenegro.

Leave Mostar early and head south through Trebinje, crossing the border into Montenegro. Your first destination is Perast, a serene, UNESCO-protected town that feels like a piece of Venice anchored in the Adriatic. This baroque settlement is famous for its stone palaces and its two iconic islands.

Take a five-minute boat ride to Our Lady of the Rocks, a man-made islet built over centuries by sailors dropping stones. The church there houses a rich collection of silver votive tablets and a famous tapestry. Back on the mainland, enjoy a quiet espresso on the waterfront, taking in the stillness of the bay before the midday crowds arrive.

Just a short drive along the winding coastal road lies Kotor, a medieval masterpiece enclosed by massive stone walls. Enter through the main Sea Gate to find a labyrinth of marble streets and historic squares. Highlights include the Cathedral of St. Tryphon, a monument to Romanesque architecture, and the quirky Cats Museum, which celebrates the city’s favorite four-legged inhabitants. For lunch, settle into a shaded stone terrace in a hidden plaza to try traditional black risotto or fresh sea bream drizzled in local olive oil.

If you have the energy, challenge yourself with the hike up to the San Giovanni Fortress. Climbing the 1,350 ancient steps is a rite of passage for visitors; from the top, the view of the red-tiled roofs against the deep blue water of the bay is arguably the most photographed sight in the Balkans. If you prefer a more relaxed afternoon, wander the lower city walls or visit the Maritime Museum to learn about the bay’s long history of legendary sea captains.

As the sun begins to dip behind the limestone cliffs, start your drive back toward Mostar. If time permits, stop in Trebinje for dinner under the massive plane trees in the town square. This final stop offers a perfect transition back to the atmosphere of Herzegovina, concluding a day filled with stunning contrasts between sea and stone.
