Sierpe: Frog Tour (Herping)｜Costa Rica

As the sun sets over Sierpe, the rainforest comes alive with a completely different world of wildlife. Begin your 3-hour twilight-to-night adventure with a short boat crossing of the Sierpe River. From there, walk for about 30 minutes along a gravel road before reaching the forest trail.

Accompanied by a knowledgeable bilingual naturalist guide and frog researcher, explore mature and riparian forest habitats, following the sounds and movements of nocturnal wildlife. The pristine environment provides excellent habitat for frogs and other fascinating creatures.

With flashlights in hand, search the forest for colorful frogs, snakes, insects, and other nocturnal animals. You may also encounter glowing mushrooms and, if you're especially lucky, a kinkajou moving through the trees. The guides are experienced at finding and identifying wildlife that can be difficult to spot during the day.

The tour is particularly rewarding during the rainy season, from late May through November, when amphibian activity increases. However, wildlife can be found throughout the year, making every night in the forest a little different.

This is a customized night expedition with a special focus on wildlife and photography. Rather than simply observing the forest from a distance, slow down, listen, look carefully, and discover the hidden life of the rainforest after dark.
