Discover one of Argentina’s most unique private horseback experiences: a 4-day journey through the wild Andean landscapes of Barreal, San Juan. This private adventure combines horseback riding, remote camping, ancient rock art, local culture, traditional food, and unforgettable stargazing beneath some of the clearest skies in South America.
Your journey begins in Mendoza, where you will travel through scenic mountain routes toward Barreal. Along the way, you will visit highlights such as Cacheuta, Potrerillos Dam, and the Tunduqueral archaeological site in Uspallata, known for its ancient petroglyphs carved into the rock by Indigenous communities. After lunch, continue toward Barreal, a peaceful village surrounded by poplars, mountain views, and the quiet rhythm of rural life. The first night is spent in a charming countryside inn, where you will enjoy a traditional Argentine asado and a stargazing experience under Barreal’s pristine night sky.
On the second day, the horseback expedition begins. After breakfast, meet the horses and ride into the open landscapes surrounding Barreal, following old trails, dry riverbeds, and wide valleys with the Andes as a constant backdrop. This is a slow and immersive way to experience the land, connecting with the silence, the horses, and the natural beauty of the region. During the ride, enjoy a traditional Argentine picada before arriving at the remote camping area near Los Morrillos, where you will spend the night surrounded by nature.
On the third day, visit the ancient cave paintings of Los Morrillos, one of the most important archaeological sites in western Argentina. These red and black paintings, attributed to the Ansilta Culture, are thousands of years old and include mysterious human-like and astral-inspired figures. Encountering this rock art on horseback, in such a remote and powerful setting, creates a unique connection with the people who once inhabited this land.
After visiting the site, continue riding through the surrounding Andean terrain and enjoy a second night of wild camping. As the sun sets, the sky becomes one of the main highlights of the experience. With very little light pollution, Barreal offers extraordinary conditions for observing the stars, the Milky Way, and the vastness of the night sky.
On the final day, enjoy breakfast at camp before riding back toward Barreal. After saying goodbye to the horses, begin the return journey to Mendoza.
This is more than a horseback tour: it is a private nomadic experience designed for travelers seeking nature, silence, history, and an authentic connection with the Andes.
