Évora is a most beautifully preserved medieval town, an alluring place to delve into the past. Inhabited for several millennia, it is one of the megalithic hotspots of Portugal, with several neolithic sites in the vicinity, the oldest dating back to 5000 years ago. Celtic tribes inhabited the region when the Roman troops arrived to conquer Lusitania. Pliny the Elder mentions Évora in the first century AD as “Ebora Cerealis”, a pre-roman fortified site. The name Évora stems from “ebura” in Proto-Celtic, meaning "yew tree”, due to the presence of said tree in the area. The city was ruled by Romans, Moors, and Portuguese kings and thus is deeply rooted in both culture and architecture.
