Product Info

A private journey through Hanoi's French colonial past, the birth of modern Vietnam, local street food and the city's famous coffee culture.

Your experience begins at 1:30 PM with private hotel pickup, followed by a walk toward Hoan Kiem Lake. 

Start at the King Ly Thai To Monument, where your guide introduces the history of Hoan Kiem Lake, its legends and its importance to Hanoi. 

Continue toward the historic Hanoi Post Office. Learn how the city's communication system developed during the French colonial period and visit the building before continuing through the elegant streets surrounding Hoan Kiem Lake. 

Walk along Dinh Le Street, known for its bookshops and local atmosphere, before reaching the iconic Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi. Discover the history of one of Hanoi's most famous luxury hotels and hear how the city's sophisticated café culture developed, including the story behind Vietnamese egg coffee. 

Then walk to the magnificent Hanoi Opera House. Admire its French-inspired architecture and learn about its connection to the Opéra Garnier in Paris. 

From the Opera House, walk along Trang Tien Street and visit the exhibition when it is open (weekday). The exhibition provides an opportunity to see historical photographs of Hanoi during the French colonial period. 

After exploring the exhibition, discover another beloved part of Hanoi's local culture: Trang Tien Ice Cream. Stop for a taste of this famous Hanoi treat while your guide explains its history and place in the city's everyday life. 

Continue through Hang Khay and Hang Trong, stopping at the famous Hanoi Moi Newspaper building for photographs before continuing toward St. Joseph's Cathedral. 

Admire the cathedral from outside and learn about its history and architectural character. Then enjoy a local snack at the long-established with options such as fried fermented pork rolls (nem chua rán) or bánh gối, depending on availability. 

The experience then becomes more historical as you walk toward Hỏa Lò Prison. Spend approximately 1.5 hours exploring the prison site and learning about its history, from the French colonial period through the wartime period. Your guide will help put the exhibits, buildings and stories into the wider historical context of Hanoi and Vietnam. 

Finally, continue toward 165 Phùng Hưng, an area associated with Hanoi's famous Train Street. End the experience at a local café with a Vietnamese coffee After an afternoon combining architecture, history, local food and coffee, your private experience comes to an end.

  • Hotel pickup: Your guide will pick you up directly from your hotel in central Hanoi at 13:20 PM.
  • The tour involves considerable walking, including walking between historic sites, streets and Hỏa Lò Prison. The exhibition: The exhibition is not available every day and is closed on weekends. When the exhibition is closed, the itinerary will be adjusted and the guide will provide additional commentary and sightseeing in the French Quarter. 
  • Train Street: Access to railway-side areas can be affected by local regulations and safety controls. The final café stop and exact viewing location may therefore be adjusted according to local conditions. 
  • What to Bring: Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, hat or umbrella, comfortable clothing, some Vietnamese cash for optional purchases
