Product Info

Over the course of around 2.5 hours, the walking tour offers a nuanced perspective on the history of women in the GDR. Based on current research and contemporary sources, we examine the state's women's policy in terms of its claims and reality, using locations and buildings in Potsdam.

The guided tour begins at the foot of Brauhausberg. There, the political structure of the GDR and the role of women in the SED will be explained using the former SED district headquarters as an example. On the way through the city center, topics such as equality and paid work, the triple burden on working women, and women's rights will be discussed.
The repressive system of the GDR will also be discussed with reference to former buildings of the Ministry for State Security. This involves the gender-specific structures within the MfS and their effects on female prisoners. The walking tour ends at Luisenplatz, a symbol of the Peaceful Revolution, where we will conclude by talking about the women's movement.

Length of the walking tour: Approximately 5 km (3 miles) (barrier-free)
Young people up to 17 years old: Free of charge (Please book a free child ticket for this)
Standard: €25 per person
Concession: €20 per person
(Applies to school pupils, students, trainees, pensioners and recipients of social benefits)
Private tours can also be booked.

Note on accessibility:
The tour includes a total of approximately 3 miles of walking. Seating is available at various stops for short breaks. The tour is also suitable for seniors and guests with limited mobility (e.g., no stairs). Of course, we adapt the walking pace to the needs of the group.
