The unique buildings tell stories of clerks, money counting tables, proletarian excavators, and brickworkers. They gave the city a radically new look in the 1920s: the narrow streets of the Gängeviertel disappeared and were replaced by large office buildings that embodied Hamburg's outstanding importance as a trading metropolis and port city.
