Yerevan doesn't reveal itself all at once - it unfolds, one square at a time. This walking tour starts where the city's heart beats loudest: Republic Square, ringed by rose-toned tuff buildings that have watched over Armenia's history for nearly a century. Pause at the square's edge to taste spring water rising straight from the ground, a small ritual locals have practiced for generations.

From there, the streets pull you deeper into old Yerevan. Pass the Moscow Cinema, a striking piece of Soviet-era architecture and one of the city's most photographed landmarks, on your way to the Opera and Ballet Theater. Just beyond it lies Freedom Square - known simply as "Opera" to locals - where skaters glide past Swan Lake and the city's youth gather as the day winds down. It's one of the few places where you'll see Yerevan exactly as Yerevantsis see it.

The walk continues through French Square and the quiet greenery of the Conservatory park before arriving at the tour's centerpiece: the Cascade Complex. Locals call it the Stairway to Heaven, and the name isn't an exaggeration. Climb its 572 steps - past contemporary sculpture, sunlit cafés, and the occasional open-air concert - and the city opens up beneath you in every direction, with the snow-capped silhouette of Mount Ararat rising on the horizon. It's the kind of view that explains, better than any history lesson could, why people fall in love with this city.
