For those who feel they have already seen all of Kyoto. Why not take a deeper look into the city? Japanese culture is more than just tea ceremonies and traditional performing arts. The sensibilities and ways of thinking of the Japanese people are deeply embedded in the everyday lives and homes of ordinary people. In this workshop, we will use a Kyoto machiya (traditional townhouse) with over 200 years of history as a gateway to explore the sensibilities that remain in daily life. From there, we will broaden our perspective to the city of Kyoto, connecting to the origins of Heian-kyo and the history of how the capital was protected. 'Why do Japanese people act this way?' 'Why are Japanese streets so clean?' This workshop provides answers to these kinds of questions. We will learn through fun experiences and quizzes, all backed by professional historical and folkloric research. At the end, we will make Washi amulets. You will choose your favorite Washi paper and tie a Mizuhiki knot to create your very own personal charm. This experience is for those who want to know more than just the tourist spots—for those who want to understand the Kyoto where ordinary people have lived and the history behind it. It is an experience for those who want to get to know Kyoto on a deeper, more profound level. *This workshop is conducted in English (questions and supplementary explanations in Japanese are also available).
A 200-Year-Old Kyoto Machiya
The workshop is held in a quiet machiya located a 6-minute walk from Imadegawa Station in Kyoto. You will be welcomed by wooden lattice doors and a noren curtain. We will discuss the hidden history of Kyoto in a tatami-matted room, a space where soft light filters through the shoji screens and looks out onto a garden.
Crafting with Traditional Materials
You will choose one sheet from Kyoto Chiyogami or Tosa Washi paper to create your amulet. While everyone will fold the origami together, you can choose whether to write your own prayer slip or use a pre-written one. You can also choose whether to tie the Awaji knot yourself or use a pre-made one. This is recommended for both those who want to do everything themselves and those who prefer a more casual approach.
