Embark on a small adventure in Nishiawakura Village! We'll start by making firewood from wood and starting a fire ourselves. Three days of doing everything ourselves, away from our comfortable daily lives. What thoughts and discoveries will we see here? We have planned this program so that you can experience this in the satoyama (traditional rural landscape) of Nishiawakura Village. Parents are also very welcome to participate. We hope you will come and see and enjoy Nishiawakura Village with us. [What is Hyakumori Study Abroad?] We take in children from 4th grade of elementary school to 3rd grade of junior high school for one year in Nishiawakura Village, where they live and eat with our staff and engage in practical activities. Our goal is to nurture individuals who can spread their wings in the future by interacting with the people of the village and making use of the environment. On weekdays, they attend Nishiawakura Elementary School or Nishiawakura Junior High School and study alongside the village's children and students. International students with new values and classmates who have grown up in the village's unique and free-spirited culture. Through healthy interaction between the two groups, they can acquire an understanding of diverse environments and the ability to adapt. Weekend activities are a time for international students to showcase their individuality. The activities vary, from making miso and preparing eels for dinner to chopping firewood for bonfires, growing vegetables in the fields, and helping to replant moss phlox in the park, but we value the wishes of the international students and the opportunities they encounter in the village. During this time, we aim to cultivate their decision-making ability to choose what they want to do, and the perseverance and initiative to see it through. "Everyone in the village is a teacher." We, the Hyakumori Study Abroad staff, are not teachers. We may know a little more than the international students because we have lived longer, but that doesn't mean we can teach them everything. If there is someone in the village who is knowledgeable, that person will become the teacher in that field. Ask others when you don't know something. Rely on others. It seems simple, but it's difficult. In Nishiawakura Village, you will learn how to interact with people, something that you can't learn once you become an adult. Perhaps, if an international student is knowledgeable in a particular area, we may ask them to be a teacher as one of the villagers.
