The Setouchi Triennale is a contemporary art festival held every three years, set against the backdrop of the islands in the Seto Inland Sea. 

The inaugural festival took place in 2010, spanning approximately 100 days across the spring, summer, and autumn seasons. Visitors can experience the unique charm of the Setouchi region during different times of the year. Attracting around 1 million domestic and international visitors, it is one of Japan's most iconic international art festivals. With the theme of 'Restoration of the Sea,' the festival encourages visitors to use art as a guide, traveling between islands to interact with artists, local residents, and volunteers, while immersing themselves in the natural scenery, island culture, and local lifestyle. This unique fusion of art and regional characteristics has resonated with many people both in Japan and abroad.

 Since ancient times, the Seto Inland Sea has been a vital transportation hub. Ships traveling between the islands brought new cultures and styles, which blended with the islands' indigenous traditions to form unique landscapes and customs that are still preserved today. However, with the waves of globalization, efficiency, and homogenization, the islands have faced declining populations, an aging society, and a loss of regional vitality, causing their unique character to gradually fade. Therefore, the Setouchi Triennale aims to restore the vitality of the Setouchi islands, where beautiful nature and humanity coexist in harmony, and to transform the Seto Inland Sea into a 'Sea of Hope' for all regions on Earth.
