Founded in 2012 in Tainan by Li Yu, Li Wen-hsin, and Chu Hsin-yi, the brand combines selected ingredients from across Taiwan to develop all-natural, handcrafted soft-serve desserts. By constantly innovating and breaking the public's established impressions of ice cream, it sparked a massive soft-serve craze across Taiwan.
With over 2.5 million units sold in a 12-square-meter space to 200,000 customers, the high-quality product experience gained market attention, driving a 4 billion TWD soft-serve business opportunity across Taiwan and becoming a local tourism miracle.
After NINAO became famous, elders suggested that Li Yu should broaden his international perspective. During a field trip to Japan, he was amazed by the artisanal gelato made by renowned shops. Upon returning, he decided to attend the Gelato University in Italy to learn how to make authentic Italian gelato. After returning home, he opened the NINAO Classico ice cream gallery and bakery concept store in 2014. In 2015, he won the silver medal at the Gelato World Tour East Asia with the local Taiwanese ingredient-based 'La Dolce Vita Di Te (Popcorn Lychee Honey Black Tea)'. In 2017, limited-time pop-up stores in Taipei and Shanghai achieved an astonishing record of 1,500 sales per day. In 2018, the opening of the Tokyo Sangenjaya flagship concept store took Japan by storm, and in the same year, he represented Taiwan to win the Glenfiddich World Cocktail Championship, followed by the continuous expansion of branches in Japan.
