—Tourist Spot Introduction—

[World Heritage Site: Kumano Sanzan]

① Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine ② Kumano Hayatama Taisha Shrine ③ Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine

The three shrines of Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha are collectively known as the "Kumano Sanzan" (Three Grand Shrines of Kumano). The Kumano Sanzan are located in the southeastern part of Wakayama Prefecture, separated by a distance of 20 to 40 km from each other, and are connected by the "Kumano Kodo Nakahechi" pilgrimage route. While each of the three shrines has its origins in individual nature worship, the principal deities of the three shrines were mutually invited and enshrined together, and they came to be worshipped as the "Kumano Sansho Gongen" (Three Deities of Kumano).

[Nachisan Seiganto-ji Temple]

Nachisan was founded 1600 years ago by the Indian monk, Rakugyo Shonin. It is said that he drifted ashore at Kumano-ura, reached Nachi Falls, and, after undergoing rigorous ascetic training, attained enlightenment from Kannon. Approximately 200 years later, a temple was built, and Shobutsu Shonin from Yamato entered the mountain and enshrined Nyoirin Kannon.

Nachi Falls

The water flowing from the Okumotori mountain range deep in Nachi forms the great waterfall, and it is said that there are 48 waterfalls in the entire mountain range, with Nachi-no-Taki being the one with the greatest drop. This waterfall is also called Ichino-Taki, and it is 133m high, 13m wide at the top, and the waterfall basin is 10m deep, with the amount of water falling being about 1 ton per second.
