From San Pedro de Atacama: Andean Adventure to Cerro Toco｜Chile

Enjoy the unique experience of climbing Cerro Toco (5,604 m above sea level), one of the most accessible and spectacular mountains in the Atacama highlands. Located near the border with Bolivia and opposite the imposing Licancabur Volcano, this climb offers a privileged view of the Atacama Salt Flats, the Andes, and the volcanoes surrounding the region.

The adventure begins in San Pedro de Atacama, where we hold a pre-climb meeting one or two days before the ascent. During the meeting, we review the gear, the weather conditions, and the safety protocols, ensuring that each participant is prepared for the activity and acclimated to the altitude.

On the day of the ascent, we will pick you up from your accommodation between 7:00 and 7:30 AM. From San Pedro, we travel by vehicle to the starting point of the trail, located at an altitude of about 5,300 meters. During the journey, you can enjoy unique highland landscapes: rock formations, open valleys, and the immensity of the driest desert on the planet.

Once at the starting point, we begin the ascent on foot to the summit, which takes approximately 1.5 to 3.5 hours, depending on the pace of the group and the conditions on the day. The route is stable and of low technical difficulty, so no previous experience is required, although good acclimatization is necessary. Our UIMLA-certified and SERNATUR-recognized tour guides will accompany you at all times, offering support, guidance, and strategic breaks to enjoy the surroundings.

During the ascent, you will be able to appreciate the grandeur of the Altiplano, with views of the Atacama Salt Flats and the Licancabur, Juriques, and Sairecabur volcanoes. Upon reaching the summit of Cerro Toco, a 360° panoramic view awaits you, where the clear sky merges with the mountains and the desert in an unforgettable show.

At the top, we'll take a break to rest, take photos, and, if you wish, participate in a simple ceremony of thanksgiving to the mountain, inspired by Andean traditions. We then begin the descent to the starting point and return by vehicle to San Pedro de Atacama, completing a day full of achievements and incomparable landscapes.
