This special tour combines everything that makes Würzburg special: wine history, atmospheric views, and the city's history over time. To begin with, we'll take a walk around the Marienberg Fortress, take a first look at its historic walls, and enjoy brief insights into its significance for the city. From there, the path leads us to the Panoramaweg and directly into the Innere Leiste vineyard.
The first of three wines awaits us at our first tasting stop – each from a different Würzburg winery. There will also be lively insights into Franconian viticulture, anecdotes, and interesting facts about the region, grape varieties, and tradition. From the Innere Leiste, the view opens up to Höchberg, the baroque Käppele, and the striking Maschikuliturm.
As we continue our journey through the vineyard landscape, we learn more about the interplay of soils, climate, and grape varieties in Franconia – and about the people who have shaped these slopes. After a short climb, we reach the Schlossberg vineyard. There we enjoy the second wine from another Würzburg winery and an impressive view of the Old Town, the cathedral, the Main, and the surrounding hills. At the same time, we look back at the fortress, which towers majestically above us.
With this panorama, we delve deeper into the history of the city: from the times of the prince-bishops, through destruction and reconstruction, to the modern university city. Along the way, we also take a look at the famous Würzburger Stein vineyard. Even though we don't enter it, its significance for the region is clearly explained.
After a final leg through the vineyards, we will taste the third wine – again from another Würzburg vineyard. After that, there are two possible ways to end the tour:
Either we go down together to the Mainviertel, one of the oldest and most unspoiled districts of Würzburg, where the guided tour ends in a relaxed atmosphere near the river.
Or, if desired, we can return to the starting point at the Citadel – for example, if we parked there.
