Explore Motherwell, the third-largest township in South Africa, located in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) in the Eastern Cape Province. Established in the 1980s, it was developed as a relocation area during apartheid to accommodate residents displaced from other parts of the city. Today, Motherwell is home to a vibrant and diverse community, with an estimated population of over 140,000 people.

The township serves as a major residential and economic hub in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, featuring schools, clinics, shopping centers, and small local businesses. Despite facing socio-economic challenges such as unemployment and limited infrastructure, Motherwell is rich in culture, resilience, and community spirit. It plays an important role in the urban development and cultural identity of Gqeberha, reflecting both the struggles and the progress of post-apartheid South Africa.
