We'll pick you up at 6:00 a.m. from your hotel in Popayán to start this full-day excursion.
We'll head to the Tierradentro National Archaeological Park, one of the most important archaeological sites in Colombia. It's a 3-hour trip, and we'll stop in the amazing valley of the frailejones (a unique plant in the Andean ecosystem). We'll then head to the village of Inzá to enjoy a delicious typical local breakfast. Then we'll walk for about an hour until we reach the great pyramid of Inzá and its underground caves. From here, we'll see magnificent landscapes over the Ullucos River.
Then we'll arrive at the archaeological park, which is full of anthropological and historical treasures. We'll take a tour of the park, where we'll see vestiges of three historical periods: pre-Hispanic, colonial, and republican. We'll walk among pyramids and underground tombs called hypogea, which were dug directly into the volcanic rock. You'll admire the decorations of the burial chambers, some of which are up to 8 meters deep.
You'll also learn about the history of the brave Paeces indigenous people, who inhabited this territory before the Spaniards arrived. These towns allied with their neighbors to defend their lands. Were they the builders of these tombs? We'll find out together!
After visiting the hypogea, we'll head up to the surface to check out the animal-shaped stone statues that represented indigenous idols. We'll also visit the park museum, where objects found during the excavations are on display.
At noon, we'll take a break to enjoy a delicious lunch that includes chicken or meat, accompanied by rice, soup, salad, patacones, and a drink. In the afternoon, we'll explore vestiges of the colonial era by visiting the doctrinaire chapel of San Andrés de Pisimbalá, a curious stone structure with a thatched roof.
Finally, we'll head back to Popayán, where we'll drop you off at your hotel around 7:00 PM.
