Rincon de la Vieja: Las Pailas trail + Oropendola Waterfall｜Costa Rica

The Las Pailas area showcases the power of Rincón de la Vieja Volcano, the largest and most active volcano in Guanacaste. Here, you'll encounter fumaroles, geysers, and bubbling mud pots — unique volcanic features found nowhere else in Costa Rica.

Accompanied by our bilingual naturalist guide, embark on a 3.5-km circular trek along the Las Pailas trail through the tropical dry forest, taking in stunning views of the volcano's activity. Keep an eye out for wildlife: with over 300 bird species and animals like coatis, armadillos, iguanas, and white-faced, howler, and spider monkeys, this is a wildlife-rich adventure.

After the hike, cool off with a revitalizing dip at La Oropendola Waterfall. The trail from the park entrance crosses varied terrain, including hanging bridges, before arriving at the falls. Cascading 25 meters into a turquoise pool within the lush Blanco River canyon, La Oropendola creates an enchanting tropical oasis.

After relaxing at the waterfall, the tour concludes with a return hike to Hacienda Guachipelin. Alternatively, hotel transportation to and from the park and waterfall is available, one-way or round trip, just a 10-minute drive away.
