This 5-day overland journey explores the cultural and natural highlights of eastern Turkmenistan, beginning in the capital Ashgabat and ending at the Farab–Alat border crossing into Uzbekistan. The route combines modern city landmarks, UNESCO archaeological sites, remote mountain landscapes, and diverse regional scenery.

Day 1 – Ashgabat
Arrive in Ashgabat and meet your local guide for a transfer to the hotel. After check-in, start a guided city tour of the Turkmen capital, known for its white-marble architecture, wide boulevards, and monumental squares. Visit Independence Park, the Arch of Neutrality, and other major landmarks. An optional visit to the National Museum is available. In the evening, enjoy a drive to see the illuminated city.

Day 2 – Ashgabat to Mary and Ancient Merv
Travel east toward Mary by road or by a short domestic flight, depending on schedule. Upon arrival, visit Ancient Merv, one of the most important Silk Road cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore sites such as Erk-Kala, Gyaur-Kala, Sultan-Kala, and the Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar. Learn about the historical significance of this oasis, once a major center of trade, science, and culture. Overnight in Mary.

Day 3 – Mary to Turkmenabat
Depart Mary and drive northeast across agricultural plains and steppe landscapes, with occasional views of the Amu Darya River. Arrive in Turkmenabat, the regional hub of Lebap province. After hotel check-in, take a relaxed walk through central areas or along the river embankment to experience the city’s local atmosphere. Overnight in Turkmenabat.

Day 4 – Turkmenabat to Koytendag Mountains
Continue east toward the Koytendag region, one of the country’s most remote and scenic areas. The landscape shifts from plains to rugged mountain terrain as you approach the nature reserve. Visit the Dinosaur Plateau, where hundreds of Jurassic-era footprints are preserved in limestone. Depending on conditions, visit sites such as Umbar Dere Gorge or Kyrk Gyz Cave, known for unique geological and natural features. Overnight at a simple guesthouse or mountain accommodation.

Day 5 – Koytendag to Turkmenabat and Border Crossing
Spend the morning exploring viewpoints or taking a short walk in the foothills of the Aýrybaba Range. Return to Turkmenabat and continue to the Farab–Alat border crossing. Assistance is provided with departure procedures before you continue your journey toward Bukhara in Uzbekistan.

This tour offers a balanced combination of history, culture, and nature while covering a key eastbound route across Turkmenistan, making it ideal for travelers continuing along the Silk Road.
