Know Before You Go: Before visiting Mountain Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, visitors should know that gorilla families may be found either close or far from the starting point depending on their movement in the forest, so trekking time can vary from a short walk to several hours.
Know Before You Go: A valid permit is required and the hike takes place in dense rainforest with steep, sometimes muddy terrain. Visitors should wear hiking boots, long trousers, a rain jacket, and carry water. Hiring a porter is highly recommended for comfort and support.
Know Before You Go: If a visitor is unable to continue walking, porters can assist by carrying them in a traditional Rwandan stretcher (locally known as “ingobyi”), ensuring they can still complete the experience safely.
Know Before You Go: Once the gorillas are located, visitors spend one hour observing them at a safe distance under strict ranger guidance.
