History & Heritage of Château de Chantilly

Located to the north of Paris, Château de Chantilly is one of France’s greatest treasures—a sanctuary of art, aristocracy, and architectural brilliance. Its story spans nearly eight centuries, shaped by some of the most influential families in French history.

A Legacy of the Montmorency Family
The estate’s origins trace back to the powerful Montmorency dynasty, one of France’s oldest noble lineages. During the Renaissance, Anne de Montmorency—soldier, statesman, and close advisor to King François I—transformed Chantilly into an elegant manor surrounded by manicured gardens.

The Golden Age of the Prince de Condé
In the 17th and 18th centuries, Chantilly reached its artistic and cultural peak under the Princes of Condé, cousins of the French kings. The most celebrated among them, Louis II de Bourbon, known as the Grand Condé, hosted lavish gatherings that turned Chantilly into a hub of literature, politics, and pleasure.

It was here that Molière premiered plays, philosophers exchanged ideas, and Europe’s elite admired the opulence of French aristocratic life.

The Musée Condé – A Palace of Art
The world’s second-largest collection of antique paintings after the Louvre
Works by Raphael, Botticelli, Poussin, Watteau, and more
Over 1,500 manuscripts, including the priceless Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry
Intact 19th-century galleries displayed exactly as the Duke intended—no pieces may ever leave the estate.

The Great Stables – The Temple of the Horse
Perhaps the most iconic symbol of Chantilly—aside from the castle itself—is its monumental stable complex, often regarded as the most beautiful stables in the world.
Commissioned by Louis-Henri de Bourbon, 7th Prince of Condé, the Great Stables were designed by architect Jean Aubert in a monumental classical style.
Legend says the Prince believed he would be reincarnated as a horse—so he demanded stables fit for a king.

Seasonal equestrian shows presented inside the historic riding arena

This combination of heritage and living performance makes the Great Stables a unique cultural experience in Europe.

Noël au Château de Chantilly (Chantilly Christmas)

From mid November, the Château de Chantilly, its park, and the Grandes Écuries (Great Stables) become a magical realm of Christmas.

The event combines tradition and enchantment: festive lights, decorations, storytelling, equestrian performances, and more.

Key Highlights

Equestrian Christmas Show
A major highlight: a show by the château’s equestrian company featuring horses, acrobatics, storytelling and music.

Culinary & Sweet Delights
Workshops to make the iconic Crème Chantilly, or a “gourmand corner” in the park offers hot chocolate, crêpes and seasonal treats.

Decor & Illumination
The château, its gardens, and the stables are richly decorated and illuminated, creating a “kingdom of festivity.”
