Summer (approximately June to August) is the prime season for visiting the Gannan region, including Zagana and Ruoergai Flower Lake. During this period, the weather is pleasant, the grasslands are verdant, wildflowers are in bloom, and the scenery is spectacular. In autumn (September to October), you can admire golden grasslands and colorful forests, each offering its own unique beauty.
The optimal time for viewing the majestic sunset over the Yellow River's First Bend in Gannan is typically from summer to early autumn (around June to September). This period generally offers more stable weather conditions, suitable sunset times, and soft lighting, which together create a breathtaking spectacle of the winding river and the setting sun, resulting in a stunning panorama.
Located in southern Gansu Province, the Gannan region is a vital part of the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Its unique geography blends plateau, grassland, forest, and river landscapes. It is renowned for its Tibetan Buddhist culture, with Labrang Monastery being one of the world's largest Tibetan Buddhist institutes, exuding a profound religious atmosphere. The confluence of the Yellow and Tao Rivers showcases the marvels of natural waterways, representing a perfect fusion of natural and cultural scenery.
The 'Rock Road' typically refers to a section of the Jiange-Diebu Highway between Diebu and Zagana in the Gannan region. This road is celebrated for its magnificent natural landscapes, traversing primeval forests, alpine meadows, canyons, and Tibetan villages. Named after explorer Joseph Rock, who once traveled through the area, it is hailed as one of China's most beautiful rural roads, offering an excellent route to experience Gannan's topography and culture.
When traveling from Lanzhou to the Gannan region, the usual route involves heading south along the G75 Lan-Hai Expressway, then transitioning to provincial or county roads. Taking Zagana as an example, the journey from Lanzhou to Zagana typically takes about 7-8 hours by car, passing through places like Hezuo City. While the drive is lengthy, the scenery along the way is beautiful, allowing you to experience the gradual transition from urban landscapes to plateaus and grasslands.
When traveling to high-altitude areas in Gannan, such as Lianbao Yuzhe and Ruoergai Flower Lake, it is recommended to get adequate rest beforehand, avoid strenuous physical activity, and limit alcohol consumption. Upon arrival, proceed at a relaxed pace, drink water frequently in small amounts, and carry emergency medications like 'Gaoyuan An' or Rhodiola. If you experience severe discomfort, inform your driver or guide immediately and consider descending to a lower altitude if necessary.
When participating in outdoor activities in high-altitude areas of Gannan, such as Sangke Grassland and Namo Grand Canyon, pay attention to sun protection and staying warm, as temperature fluctuations between day and night can be significant. Wear comfortable shoes for light hiking and be mindful of your footing. Respect the local Tibetan culture and religious customs; avoid taking unauthorized photos or touching religious artifacts. In case of adverse weather, cease outdoor activities and ensure you carry sufficient water and energy snacks.
When visiting places like Langmusi and the Ganjia Secret Realm in Gannan, in addition to altitude sickness prevention, it's crucial to protect your skin and eyes with sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses due to strong sun exposure. Pack warm clothing to cope with the temperature variations. It's advisable to bring common medications, personal toiletries, and a portable charger. Respect local customs, maintain environmental cleanliness, and be mindful of food hygiene to avoid gastrointestinal issues.
