Choose to depart from Okahukura to Whangamomona and vice versa as you have two ways to approach this tour, depending on your departure point. Pass by small villages such as Matiere and Ohura as you make your way to Tokirima for a wonderful lunch meal. Enjoy afternoon tea to replenish your energy as you make your way through the longest tunnel in the tour, spanning over 1.5 kilometers long.
Cap off your rail cart adventure with the spectacular Tangarakau Gorge and head back to the Taumarunui Depot via the shuttle service.
Travel back in time and learn more about the rich history of the area as you travel through the tunnels in this educational sightseeing tour!
— Itinerary —
Option 1: Okahukura to Whangamomona
- Depart from Taumarunui Depot at 7:30 am and arrive in Whangamomona at approximately 3:30 pm
- The shuttle will bring you back to Taumarunui Depot at around 5:45 pm
- Hop aboard the rail carts at Okahukura and see the beautiful views of the King Country before departing for the tunnels
- Pass through Matiere and Ohura before arriving at Tokirima, where you will enjoy lunch and create your own sandwich
- After lunch, ride through the spectacular Tangarakau Gorge and on to Whangamomona
- Enjoy a peaceful stroll around the Republic before returning to Taumarunui
Option 2: Whangamomona to Okahukura
- Meet at Taumarunui Depot at 7:15 am and depart for Whangamomona
- The Rail Carts depart Whangamomona at 9:30 am and arrive in Taumarunui at around 5:30 pm
- Choose to visit Taumarunui and enjoy an informative bus ride down to Whangamomona, or meet at the Whangamomona Hotel
- Feast on a delicious lunch meal and create your own sandwich
- Pass through the longest tunnel spanning 1.5 kilometers to cap off your journey! Afterward, return to Whangamomona via shuttle service
