Product Info

Welcome to Trastevere! Here, where today there is life, laughter and the scent of carbonara, the streets were once frequented by courtesans, monks, brigands and restless spirits. We will walk together not only among the ancient stones, but within the unwritten stories that still whisper through the alleyways.
We will start from the basilica of San Crisogono, in the heart of Trastevere, on the west bank of the Tiber: a landing place disputed by the Etruscans and Romans. We will continue towards Santa Maria in Cappella, a small, secluded medieval church on the Tiber, which for centuries was a hospital for the poor and pilgrims. Here we will talk about the "domestic miracles" and the traces of faith on walls and inscriptions. Legend tells of a very powerful woman, the Papaccia, who is said to have bewitched Innocent X and transformed the surroundings into a den of pleasure: amidst whimsical gifts and murmuring fountains, the Papaccia desecrates the hospital and pays the price in the whirlpool of the Tiber.
We will enter the basilica of Santa Cecilia and descend into the underground. In front of the statue depicting her martyrdom, we will talk about her ordeal: the caldarium and the rule of the three blows. Legend has it that, condemned with her husband and brother-in-law (both beheaded), Cecilia was first locked in the caldarium; then the executioner attempted to behead her: one, two, three blows! She was left to die a slow death for three days. In the basilica, we will see the apse mosaics (9th century) and the frescoes in the choir by Pietro Cavallini.
We will walk along Via della Lungaretta, the medieval "spine" of Trastevere: the axis that leads from the Tiber to the Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, passing among old houses, arches, and shops. It is the most iconic way to enter the district and feel its rhythm.
Finally, we will continue to the basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, one of the churches most loved by the Romans, founded according to tradition by Pope Callixtus in the 3rd century. Rebuilt in the 12th century, it impresses with its medieval façade and the apse decorated with the extraordinary mosaic of the Virgin and Christ Enthroned. Here we will recall the legend of the fons olei (the "oil spring" of 38 BC). It is said that, one night, the earth sweated oil: the trail glistened towards the Tiber and the neighbors murmured, "It's a divine sign!" From then on, the district kept the wait alive, with lamps lit and gazes turned to the sky, until the story of Mary took root right here. In the apse mosaic, the memory remains in gold: the miracle of the oil that gives rise to a church and a devotion.
This tour is ideal for those who love history, archaeology and sacred art, but also for those who want to rediscover an authentic corner of Rome, far from the most popular tourist routes. We will walk at a leisurely pace, through hidden alleys, courtyards, and past ancient signs, learning to read those details that often go unnoticed: a gesture, a symbol, a gold tessera that catches the light.
