Product Info

From the Marktplatz, Basel's vibrant center, a walk begins that not only takes you through the city, but also immerses you in its queer history. Your LGBTQ+ or queer-friendly guide opens up paths for you that people have walked for decades – searching, hoping, sometimes in secret, always with the desire for freedom.

In the narrow streets of the old town, you will learn how Switzerland decriminalized homosexuality as early as 1942 – an early step that gave many people courage, but did not immediately bring social acceptance. Between historic facades and quiet courtyards, you can feel how identity and change have been inscribed in the city.

On the Rhine, where light refracts in the water, Basel becomes a border city in two senses: geographically and emotionally. People from Germany and France found a place here where they could take a deep breath – sometimes for a weekend, sometimes for a new life. The river tells of transitions, of arrivals and departures, of the feeling of finally having space.

As you follow the water, you will hear about authors, activists, and early feminist voices who empowered queer people and created visibility long before equality was taken for granted. Your guide connects these stories with Switzerland's legal milestones – from decriminalization to the debates of the 1990s to marriage equality in 2022.
Even though many classic scene venues have disappeared, queer Basel lives on: in cultural projects, initiatives, meeting places, and people who shape the city with openness and quiet strength. Today, Basel is less noisy but profound – a place where identity not only exists, but takes on meaning.

The tour ends back at the Marktplatz. Perhaps you will pause for a moment, listen to the life pulsating around you, and feel that freedom sometimes begins very quietly.
