Step beyond the boundaries of ordinary hiking and enter one of the most secluded and atmospheric wilderness areas on Table Mountain.
Orangekloof is a rare corner of Table Mountain National Park where ancient indigenous forest, amber-coloured streams stained by fynbos tannins, hidden pools, waterfalls, and towering sandstone cliffs combine into a landscape that feels more like a forgotten fantasy realm than a mountain above a modern city.
Following the Disa River deep into the kloof, we move through lush forest, scramble over boulders, and trace tea-coloured pools as the gorge gradually tightens around us. Sunlight filters through the canopy while water, stone, and vegetation shape a constantly shifting wilderness environment.
As the route deepens, the terrain becomes more remote and immersive. Water cascades over rock ledges into dark pools, the sound of the city fades completely, and the gorge closes into a world of forest and stone.
This is not a conventional hiking trail.
The route involves river crossings, rock scrambling, steep terrain, exposed sections, and natural obstacles throughout a wild mountain gorge. Participants must be comfortable moving through rugged environments, using hands for balance and support, and navigating uneven and sometimes slippery ground.
A particular highlight is a narrow sloping ledge above a deep pool where careful foot placement and confidence are essential. Steeper sections within the gorge also require focus, balance, and sure footing.
This is an intermediate hike and is definitely not suitable for beginner hikers.
A good level of fitness is required, along with prior hiking experience. You should be comfortable with heights, exposure, and terrain with no constructed paths, handrails, or safety barriers. While no technical climbing is required, this is a genuine wilderness adventure that demands confidence, agility, and mountain awareness.
For those prepared for the challenge, Orangekloof offers access to a hidden world of ancient forest, secluded pools, dramatic gorge landscapes, and a sense of wilderness that feels completely removed from the city.
Access is controlled and visitor numbers are limited, making this one of Table Mountain’s most exclusive and atmospheric hiking experiences.
If you’re looking for a route that feels untouched, immersive, and almost otherworldly, Orangekloof delivers a rare glimpse into the mountain’s hidden heart.
