Your adventure begins with an early departure to the spectacular Simien Mountains, where you'll meet your local guide and begin the ascent to Ras Dashen (4,543m), Ethiopia's highest mountain and Africa's fourth-highest peak. As you hike through breathtaking Afro-alpine landscapes, you'll pass dramatic cliffs, rolling highlands, and rugged mountain trails while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. Along the way, keep an eye out for unique wildlife such as Walia Ibex, Ethiopian Wolf, Gelada baboons and endemic bird species. After reaching the summit and taking in the incredible views from the roof of Ethiopia, you'll descend with unforgettable memories of one of Africa's most rewarding mountain adventures.
As you gain altitude, the scenery constantly changes, offering endless opportunities for photography and quiet moments to appreciate the beauty of Ethiopia's highlands. The cool mountain air, peaceful surroundings, and vast open landscapes make the climb as rewarding as the destination itself.
Simien Mountains National Park is internationally recognized for its exceptional biodiversity and is one of the best places in Africa to observe endemic wildlife in its natural habitat. During your trek, you'll have excellent opportunities to encounter large troops of Gelada baboons, often called the "bleeding-heart monkeys" because of the distinctive red patch on their chests. These fascinating primates are found almost exclusively in the Ethiopian Highlands and are famous for their complex social behavior.
With a little more luck, you may also spot the elusive Ethiopian wolf, the world's rarest canid and Africa's most endangered carnivore. This beautiful reddish wolf survives only in Ethiopia's high mountains and is a highlight for wildlife enthusiasts. Another iconic resident of the park is the Walia ibex, a rare wild mountain goat found nowhere else on Earth. These remarkable animals are often seen navigating the steep cliffs with incredible agility.
The skies above the mountains are equally impressive. Birdwatchers can look for magnificent bearded vultures (lammergeiers) soaring effortlessly over the cliffs, as well as Verreaux's eagles, augur buzzards, thick-billed ravens, and numerous other endemic and highland bird species that thrive within the national park.
Throughout the trek, your guide will share stories about the region's history, geology, wildlife, and local culture, helping you gain a deeper appreciation for this extraordinary landscape. The Simien Mountains have long been admired for their rugged beauty, and their unique combination of towering peaks, deep valleys, and rare wildlife has made them one of Ethiopia's most celebrated destinations.
