Product Info

Discover Cartago, one of the most important cities for understanding the origins and evolution of Costa Rica, on a walking tour of its historic center accompanied by a historian.

We'll start by exploring the center of Cartago and its public spaces, where we'll learn about how the city was organized since colonial times and the role it played as a political and religious center during the first centuries of Costa Rican history.

We'll visit the Municipal Museum of Cartago, with admission included, where we'll delve into the city's history, its heritage, and the transformations it has undergone over time.

We'll continue to the Railway Station, a place that will give us an insight into the modernization process of Cartago and the importance of the railroad in the economic and social transformation of Costa Rica.

One of the highlights of the tour will be a visit to the Ruins of Santiago Apóstol, where we'll learn about the history of the different temples built on this site, the ambitious architectural project started in the 19th century, and the difficulties that prevented its completion. We'll also talk about the devastating earthquake of May 4, 1910, which profoundly transformed the city and marked a turning point in Cartago's history.

The tour will continue to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, one of the main religious centers in Costa Rica. We'll learn about the history and traditions related to La Negrita, the importance of pilgrimage, and the role that this devotion has played in the construction of Costa Rica's cultural and religious identity.

We'll also talk about the Independence of 1821, the political conflicts that arose after the separation from Spain, and events such as the Battle of Ochomogo in 1823, which helped define the political direction of the new Costa Rica and the displacement of Cartago as the political center of the country.

Finally, we'll visit the Cartago Market, where we can get a closer look at everyday life and the traditions that continue to be part of the local culture.

More than just visiting monuments, this tour seeks to understand how Cartago was built, transformed, and rebuilt by different generations. We'll talk about earthquakes, religion, politics, architecture, railroads, commerce, and traditions to discover how a city can preserve its identity even after major transformations.

At the end of the tour, you'll have a more complete view of Cartago and its importance in understanding the history, culture, and identity of Costa Rica.
